Business Consulting services

Below you will find exactly what each of our service areas covers, how we deliver it and what it typically costs. We price on a project basis so there are no surprise invoices.

Growth strategy and market positioning

Many of the businesses we work with have grown successfully to a certain point and then hit a plateau. Revenue stays flat, margins narrow and the owner cannot figure out why. The answer is usually one of three things: the pricing model has not kept up with costs, the sales effort is spread too thin across too many segments, or the business is competing on factors that customers do not actually value.

Our strategy engagement starts with a two-day diagnostic. We interview your leadership team, review three years of financial data and analyse your top ten customers by profitability (not just revenue). That analysis alone often reveals surprises.

What you get at the end:

  • A clear picture of which customers and products generate real profit
  • A pricing review with specific recommendations, not a generic "raise prices" suggestion
  • A 12-month growth plan with quarterly targets and named owners for each action
  • Two follow-up sessions (at month three and month six) to review progress

Typical duration: four to six weeks. We have run this programme for food distributors, engineering firms, recruitment agencies and care providers across Scotland and northern England.

Operational efficiency

Operational problems are expensive because they compound. A five-minute delay repeated 40 times a day across a team of eight people adds up to more than 26 hours of lost time every week. That is a full-time salary being burned on waiting, rework or miscommunication.

We map your core processes from end to end. Not with flowcharts drawn in a boardroom, but by shadowing staff on the floor, at the desk and on the phone. We time each step, count handoffs and identify where errors enter the system.

The output is a redesigned process with fewer steps, clearer responsibilities and measurable checkpoints. We then work alongside your team to implement the changes over two to four weeks, adjusting as we go.

Deliverables include:

  • Current-state process map with time and error data
  • Redesigned process with documented standard operating procedures
  • Staff training sessions (typically two half-day workshops)
  • A 30-day post-implementation review to measure results

This service works well for distribution, manufacturing, professional services and any business where the same process runs hundreds of times a month.

People, leadership and organisational design

Staff turnover is the single most underestimated cost in mid-sized businesses. Recruiting, onboarding and training a replacement for a £35k role typically costs between £15k and £25k when you account for agency fees, lost productivity during the vacancy and the learning curve of the new hire. When turnover runs above 25%, it drains cash faster than most owners realise.

We tackle this from two directions. First, we look at structure: are roles clearly defined? Do managers know what they are responsible for and what authority they have? Is the reporting line logical or has it grown organically into something confusing? Second, we look at management capability. Many first-time managers are promoted because they were good at their previous job, not because anyone taught them how to lead a team.

Our people programme includes:

  • Organisational review: structure, role descriptions, reporting lines
  • Management skills programme: six half-day sessions covering delegation, feedback, performance conversations and conflict resolution
  • Recruitment process audit: where candidates drop out, how long hiring takes, whether job adverts attract the right people
  • Retention analysis: exit interview data, engagement survey design and action planning

We have delivered this programme for care homes, tech start-ups and construction firms. The care sector results were particularly strong: one provider group cut agency staff spend by £120k over a year after reducing permanent staff turnover from 38% to 21%.

Financial planning and cash flow management

Profitable businesses fail when they run out of cash. It happens more often than you would expect, especially in sectors with long payment terms or seasonal demand. We help you build financial models that show where cash pressure will come from and what to do about it before it arrives.

This is not an accounting service. Your accountant prepares historical figures; we build forward-looking models that answer questions like: "If we win that contract in March, can we fund the extra staff and materials without a new overdraft?" or "What happens to cash flow if our two largest customers both pay 15 days late?"

What we deliver:

  • A rolling 13-week cash flow forecast tailored to your business
  • Scenario models for growth, contraction and seasonal variation
  • Debtor management review with specific actions to shorten payment cycles
  • Cost structure analysis identifying fixed costs that could become variable

Typical engagement: three weeks of analysis and model-building, followed by a quarterly review cycle if you want ongoing support.

How a typical engagement works

Every project is different, but the shape is usually the same. Here is what to expect from the first phone call to the final review.

Step 1: Initial conversation

A 30-minute call (or video meeting) where you describe the problem and we ask questions. No charge, no obligation. By the end we will tell you honestly whether we think we can help and roughly what it would cost.

Step 2: Diagnostic

If you decide to go ahead, we spend one to two weeks inside your business. We review data, observe processes and interview key people. This phase has a fixed fee, agreed in advance.

Step 3: Findings and plan

We present our findings in a short document (typically 8 to 12 pages, not 80). It includes specific recommendations, expected impact and a proposed implementation timeline. You decide which items to pursue.

Step 4: Implementation support

We work alongside your team to put the agreed changes into practice. Duration varies from two weeks to three months depending on scope. We assign a named consultant who is available by phone throughout.

Step 5: Review and handover

Once changes are embedded, we run a final review to measure results against the targets set in step 3. We hand over all documentation and tools so your team can maintain momentum without us.

Every project is scoped individually, but these ranges give you a realistic idea of investment. All fees are fixed and agreed before work begins. VAT is added where applicable.

Questions we hear often

How long before we see results?
Most clients see measurable change within 60 to 90 days of implementation starting. Some quick wins (like fixing a pricing error or eliminating a redundant approval step) show up within the first fortnight.
Do you work with businesses outside Scotland?
Yes. About a third of our clients are based in northern England. We travel for on-site work and use video calls for sessions that do not require physical presence. Travel costs outside central Scotland are included in the project fee up to a reasonable limit, which we agree at the outset.
What size of business do you typically work with?
Our sweet spot is companies with 10 to 250 employees and annual turnover between £2m and £50m. We have worked with smaller businesses on specific problems (like a pricing review for a 6-person firm), but most of our engagements are with companies that have outgrown their original structure and need help adapting.
What if we only need help with one specific issue?
That is fine. Not every engagement needs to be a full strategic review. If you know the problem already (high staff turnover in one department, a process that keeps breaking, a cash flow crunch you can see coming), we can scope a focused project around that single issue.
Can we start with the diagnostic and decide later about implementation?
Absolutely. The diagnostic is a standalone product with its own deliverable. Many clients commission it first and then decide whether to bring us back for implementation or handle it internally using the plan we provide.
